After the boys of summer have gone

Kevin Youkilis flied out to David Newhan and the Orioles' 2004 season was over. And I'm sad. It was nice seeing the O's end on an up note, beating the Red Sox 3-2 (and also taking the season series, 10-9).

It was a good game for Brian, who got his 50th double of the season (at his last at-bat, no less). He had the most doubles this season in the American League, and was only three doubles behind Lyle Overbay of the Brewers and one behind Albert Pujols of the Cardinals. He also stole a base, his 29th on the season. He was fourth in the American League for those.

Overall, I'd say it was a good season. The O's didn't finish fourth in the AL East; they pulled themselves up to 3rd. They came within spitting distance of .500, which they haven't done in a while. And man, were they fun to watch. I love the Yankees as a team, but I feel like I know the O's more. And they're a great team, full of good guys: Newhan, Javy, Miggy, Raffy.

At final count, I attended 12 games at Camden Yards and 1 at Yankee Stadium. They went 5-8, with a bunch of close games and one going into extra innings. I have a lot of fond memories of the time I've spent at the Yard. And I'm looking forward to returning there next season. I plan on going to some Washington games, sure...but the O's are my guys.

Now it's on to the postseason and cheering on the Yankees. Who knows...if the O's manage to acquire a good starting pitcher and maybe a hard hitting first baseman, maybe next year's postseason will include Baltimore.

Well played, Orioles. Well played. I'll miss you.
