I'm evil, you're evil

Great article on Fox Sports about how Boston fans can no longer complain about the Yankees' spending habits (something I've been arguing for ages). To sum up,

...when you add the astounding news of a $51.1 million offer to the reality of the Red Sox' payroll, you can only come to one conclusion:

The Red Sox are aggressively exploiting every possible revenue stream, creatively growing their big-market business in any way they can, then plowing their extra millions back into their ballclub in a vigorous attempt to compete for the World Series every year.

Nothing wrong with that.

But that's exactly what the Yankees do.

It can't be evil for one team and OK for another. It can't be horrible and offensive and ruining baseball when the Yankees do it and just fine when the Red Sox do it.

Word. I mean, $51.1 million? That's just crazy, yo.

Bitter much?

Bitter that neither the O's or the Yankees blew that much money just to talk to a pitcher? No, I'm not.

Just wait, the O's will blow plenty of money on an over-the-hill has been. Plus, you wouldnt be upset if the O's won the negotiating rights.

If the O's blew $51 million just to negotiate with a pitcher who, while successful in Japan, is fairly untested, I would flip out. In a bad way. The O's need pitching, but not like that. Just like I wouldn't be happy if they had given Soriano the deal the Cubs did. It's lunacy.

And really, the point isn't about Matsuzaka, as I don't really care about him. It's more that Red Sox fans need to not complain about the Yankees "buying championships" when they're just as guilty.

Except for the fact that the Red Sox have yet to buy themselves a championship.

Posted by: Brent at November 21, 2006 01:52 PM

Because they didn't have the second highest payroll in baseball in 2004?

My point is that the ONLY reason why the Red Sox do it is to compete in the AL East. The Yanks are the reason for the craziness, there is NO argument against that. If you want to compete against the Yanks, you have to spend. I am sure that the sox would rather not have spent the $51 mil, but we dont want to be the Orioles, perpetually in fourth place. You may be sick of Sox fans "attitude" but dont act like Yanks and O's fans' crap doesnt stink too. There is no baseball high horse for a Yankees fan. Sorry, sister, they're the biggest reason for the price insanity.

This is why you and I dont talk baseball, I think there might be a fight.

PS- I still love ya.
