Signs

Posted in My job, My life | No Comments »

I took a nap this afternoon instead of doing work–I was tired and had a headache, so figured it was for the best. Naturally, I had a dream that involved my teeth falling out. Like, all of them. They popped out of my mouth and looked like dentures. But anyway. I’ve always heard that dreams about your teeth falling out are a sign of stress. This isn’t surprising; I am pretty stressed right now, between my job and my freelance job–not to mention feeling bad about spending all my time in front of a computer, etc.

Naturally, I followed this up by going to the Orioles game, ensuring that I wouldn’t get a ton of work done today (I fit 2 hours in after I got home). Whee!

The Wieters cometh

Posted in Baseball | No Comments »

Andy MacPhail dropped it in casually during a 2nd inning conversation with Gary Thorne and Buck Martinez, but the reverberations were felt throughout Birdland. Matt Wieters is coming, and now we know when. Friday. June 29 is Matt Wieters Day. The combination of that and tonight’s 7-2 win over the Blue Jays has created excitement in O’s fans not felt in quite some time. (Their crazy hot start in 2005 may be the last time.)

It’s really exciting. It’s already been a fun season, seeing the you guys come up. Brad Bergesen. Nolan Reimold. And tonight’s starting, winning pitcher, Jason Berken. It’s cute, seeing them all interviewed about what it’s like to have your first major league game. They weren’t kidding when they said that by mid-season, the roster would look much different than it did on Opening Day.

(I’m on a high, so I’m not getting into my annoyance with how they’re handling Pie.)

Anyway, it’s all sunshine and roses…except that I can’t go on Friday! No! I had planned for ages to go whenever he was called up, but I stupidly went and bought tickets to see Arcadia at the Folger Friday night. Gah! I am actually fairly upset about this. And, I’m not even kidding here, I’m totally going to DVR the game. One does not deny the Wieters.

Wieters...waiting. Not much longer, Matt. Not much longer.

A fitting tribute

Kittens and correspondents

Posted in Deep thoughts, My life | No Comments »

They may seem completed unrelated, but the most recent batch of kittens at the Itty Bitty Kitty Committee and the new sitcom Community inspire similar feelings in me.

See, those kittens are possibly the most cute things in the world. Even knowing that a) they would have to leave eventually; b) I have two cats of my own, who are pretty darn cute; and c) even if I didn’t have cats, I live on the other side on the country so logistically couldn’t adopt the kittens, I was still totally bummed when they left. Luckily there will pictures of the Lovejoys for a while, but it makes me sad. They’re so adorable! I want them!

And thus it is with John Oliver, the British correspondent on The Daily Show. He’s been cast in Community, which has been picked up. Now, that’s a good thing–he’s seriously funny and the show looks pretty good. (Joel McHale is awesome!) But that means he’s probably leaving TDS, which sucks. I’ll miss him on the show, and he’ll be moving across the country. Which, naturally, lessens the possibility that we’ll meet, fall in love, get married, and have babies. Boo!

Now, naturally, I don’t believe that will happen. Not even should he stay in New York working on The Daily Show forever, coming down to DC on occasion. I think it’s sort of like buying lottery tickets; it’s not that people expect to win, but man, it’s fun to fantasize about it happening. But then something like him getting cast in a sitcom is like taking away the Lovejoys…it doesn’t really affect me directly, but does make me a little sad.

(Of course, after I heard the casting news, I saw on John Oliver’s MySpace page that he’s listed as “In a relationship.” Of course. Sigh.)

While you wait impatiently for an entry with actual, you know, substance, why don’t you enjoy these cute pictures from the early days of the Obama administration?

Update

So I’m crazy busy right now. There’s work. I have seven books in production and since it’s just me…it’s a lot. Then there’s the big freelance project that’s taking all my time at home. I actually had to turn down another freelance project, which upsets me. But still, I have no time until, say, July. And I still haven’t put anything up on the walls at the new apartment. But I do have a microwave cart! Only took me three hours to put together.

So pretty!

So pretty!

And happily, the cats are settling in, as well. Pem likes sitting on books and bookcases.

Colin likes my new futon, though I don’t let him on it (or in the room at all, in fact) if I’m not around.

I saw my family and his cousin one day. They were visiting from Oregon, and we went to the Natural History Museum. The kids are too young for American History, I think, but they liked Natural History.

And I’ve managed to get in some ballgames as well.

Saturday jaunt

Posted in My life, Uncategorized | No Comments »

I popped out after lunch to hit the ATM that’s near my apartment. Since it was nice out, I thought I’d walk around a bit, maybe stop at the fitness place. So I checked out some shops, found a cute little children’s consignment shop, and then discovered a sandwich shop/convenience store. Which sold both Icees and cupcakes. I figured that walking into a fitness center with a cherry Icee in one hand and a red velvet cupcake in the other might not be the best plan, so I kept walking.

And the cupcake? Excellent.

Maybe trains bring out the weird in people?

Posted in My life | No Comments »

I was walking from the busstop to my apartment this afternoon and wound up waiting for a train to pass by, as the bus I generally take in the afternoon drops me off on the far side of the train tracks from my apartment. (You can decide for yourself whether I live on the right or the wrong side of the tracks. FWIW, the bus I generally take in the morning does not require me to cross the train tracks.) Anyway, so I just leaned up against the fence, waiting for the train to continue its exciting journey to Frederick. There was a guy who looked about my age, also waiting for the train to go by. The train started up again, and I started walking. The guy looks at me and says, “Don’t fall in love with someone you can’t have.”

Right. OK. Will do, sir.
